Unmasked: The Culture of Cosplay is a mirror and a manifesto. It is a looking glass into the fantastical world of cosplay and the community beneath the costume. While tracing how imagination becomes both refuge and rebellion in a world that craves for authenticity, this documentary explores the dynamic and ever-evolving space where identity, expression, culture and inter-generational communities are shaped and communicated through the unique language of cosplay.

Who would you be in a world without limitations? Cosplayers transform admiration into authorship through their unique creative vision and approach. Every cosplay journey begins with an exploration of self and a connection with a character beyond the screen. ‘Identity’ captures the intimate moments of the cosplay process including: conceptualising, stitching, and unconventional problem solving, with the aim to examine the key role the creation process takes in helping cosplayers realise and explore their identity.

In this space, cosplayers share the desire to be seen - found - heard and cherished. Boundaries and binaries are dissolved as cosplayers connect with others from multiple stages and walks of life. Unmasked, unapologetic and unafraid, ‘Community’ explores human relationships in cosplay where communication and care transcends infinite possibilities to create a place of belonging.
